Set of Modern Greek Antikristos Vessels Sculpture Vase

About the Item

An original set of primary Antikristo pieces by the great greek artist Elena Vasilantonaki The pieces are built entirely by hand with the coiling technique, in a variety of stoneware clays, red, black, white, brown, brushed with terra sigillata and\or experimental glazes and textured surface, resulting in slight variations with each piece. Sizes are approximate as each piece is one of a kind. No watertight. Made in Athens, Greece. Approximate Sizes: Small: H 21cm x W 18 cm ( Rim 15cm) Large: H 26cm x W 20.5 cm ( Rim 15cm) "Antikristos is the name of a Greek dance and means facing one another. The shape of these vessel was inspired by the way the dancing couple hold each others arms and look into each others eyes slowly falling in love. I work instictively by confronting the form until I reach the desired balance. I want the vessel to narrate the story of the dance and the movement of the figures. I work with a stoneware black grog clay. Grog gives structure to the clay and makes it more refractory. I choose to work with this kind of clay for its crude and primitive look. I use an electric kiln and fire at 1200°C. I hand build the form using age old techniques of pinching and coiling. I shape the vessel slowly and thoughtfully with my hands. The marks from the making process are welcome and I like to emphasize them by the use of terra sigillata Terra sigillata is applied in a very thin layer, so thin that it doesn't obscure even the subtle textures on the object. This subtly nuanced skin like characteristic of the terra sigillata allows me to create vessels that invite touching them"
