Simon Gate Triton Crystal Vase for Orrefors, 1916-1920

About the Item

Important piece of Swedish art glass history. A Triton vase in vaguely blue tinted clear, multi-faceted, beveled and polished crystal glass. Designed in 1916 by Sculptor Simon Gate (1893-1945) and examples of this design was executed at Orrefors until 1920. According to our research a clear example has not been for sale since 2008. The underside of the base are scratched excessively and you can barely make the word Orrefors out. Literature: Compare with examples presented in Derek E. Ostergard och Nina Stritzel-Levine (red) 'Brilliance of Swedish Glass 1918-1939 An Alliance of Art and Industry' New York 1996, s. 174 -175 Produced by Orrefors. Ann–Marie Herlitz-Gezelius, ’Orrefors, Ett Svenskt Glasbruk’, Bokförlaget Atlantis, Stockholm 1984. Pp 26-27. 'The young, recently employed Simon Gate was also asked to modernize even the cut glass. He drew a couple of different models that was given the name 'Triton'after Carl Milles' fountain containing a bronze clock with similar shape'. The Triton model was executed at Orrefors between 1916–1920.
