Chinoiserie Vases

CHINOISERIE STYLE

Emerging in the 17th century, chinoiserie appropriated the aesthetics and imagery of popular East Asian design for European-made versions. Reflecting the exoticization of China, Japan and other countries in this era, the word directly translates from French to “Chinese-esque,” which reveals its shortcomings as a style of furniture and decor that often stereotypically and reductively mimics Asian culture rather than showcasing and paying tribute to its artistic traditions.

The enthusiastically decorative chinoiserie style was propelled by influential tastemakers including French King Louis XIV, whose Trianon de Porcelaine in 1670 was inspired by Chinese architecture. Expanded trade between the East and West led to a demand for porcelain, lacquer objects, silk and other goods, which further informed the fanciful furniture being crafted in Europe.

Artisans working in the chinoiserie style used materials and elements like pagoda shapes, bamboo, lacquer surfaces, bird and flower motifs and other interpretations of Asian design on pieces that were frequently set against vibrant wallcoverings. This whimsical approach yielded chinoiserie furniture that boasted dramatic flourishes drawing on the natural world and reflected the dominance of Rococo during the 18th century.

As chinoiserie was shaped by approximations of Asian design by European creators, it had regional variations, such as Chinese Chippendale in England where cabinets, chairs and tea tables had wooden fretwork designs and “japanned” surfaces intended to resemble lacquer work that was created in East Asia. In North America, furniture makers in Boston and New York integrated chinoiserie-painted scenes into Queen Anne furniture.

Antique chinoiserie furniture has continued to be fashionable, from its popularity with decorators of the Hollywood Regency era — James Mont, Tommi Parzinger, William Haines and Samuel Marx favored the style — to contemporary interior designers, although it brings with it a complex history.

Vintage Cloisonne Vase Chinese Enamelled Vase with Gilt Rim
Located in Bastogne, BE
A luxurious Chinese vase decorated with a multi-color painting depicting traditional flowers for oriental décor. A subtle oriental ornament, inherent only in the cloisone technique, in combination with colorful enamel, gives objects a special charm and nobility! A vivid example of Chinese decorative art and a wonderful gift to the collector! The French term "cloisone" means "placed in a cell" and refers to partitions made of copper wire that are soldered to a metallic background to separate areas of enamel of different colors. The cells are filled with enamel and burned, sometimes several times, as the enamel is compressed. The product is fired at a relatively low temperature, sufficient to melt the enamel. After firing, the vessel is polished to form a smooth surface aligned with the edges of the partitions. The protruding edges of the partitions are usually covered with gilding. Initially rejected by Chinese connoisseurs for unaesthetic bright metallic colors, products in the technique of "cloisone" began to be used in the XV century...

1970s Robert Kuo Brown Floral Enameled Chinese Cloisonne Bud Vase & Stand
Located in Dayton, OH
"Vintage 1970s to early 1980s cloisonne vase by Robert Kuo. Features a predominantly brown, green and blue floral design and a snugly fitting wooden base. Marked in gold on the base.“Robert Kuo's own story presents a life that partakes of the best of Chinese and 20th century traditions. Born in Beijing, he moved with his family to Taiwan in 1947. Kuo grew up in an artistic environment. His father, an art professor and Chinese watercolor painter, started a cloisonne atelier where Robert became an apprentice at age fifteen. Although he never engaged in formal art studies, Kuo gained technical expertise and learned about decorative tradition from ""hands on"" training. As he mastered each of the steps involved in cloisonne from preparing copper bases to enameling and firing the kilns, Kuo absorbed all the basics that were to serve him throughout his artistic career. Measure: 9". While pursuing his studies in Taipei, Kuo assisted his father in the creation of a cloisonne studio. A visit to the United States persuaded the young artist/entrepreneur that the American environment would benefit him, both personally and professionally. In 1973, he immigrated to the United States and opened a studio for cloisonne in Beverly Hills. Kuo cultivated a clientele that appreciated the way he ""opened up"" Chinese tradition. Utilizing the influences of Art Noueau...

1981 Bill Herb Dimensional Raku Pottery Mantel Vase Modern Abstract Reticulated
By Bill Herb
Located in Dayton, OH
"Bill graduated from the University of South Florida in 1973, where he studied graphics and design. Since then, he has won numerous top awards for his design and craftsmanship in raku. ""In my years at USF, I learned how to transform a smooth, flat sheet of paper into a representation of depth and dimension."" ""Over time, a unique and personal style emerged, employing clay to achieve that vision of a 3 dimensional style. The sculpture was born from a quest for surface expression as my compositions of texture and lines led me into a palpable third dimension."" ""Later, color emerged as an important factor with the use of clay colorants mixed with the raku clay body. As science is inseparable from art, I documented each experimental formula until I had achieved a broad spectrum of colors. Using these oxided clays, I have gained control of my medium and can now realize all of the dimensions I visualize."" Bill Herb...
