Superb Bronze Vase with Carved Koi by Hannya Kankei and Kōun – Japan, 20th

About the Item

A stunning collaboration between two accomplished Japanese metal artists, this elegant bronze vase features a pair of exquisitely carved koi fish, symbolizing perseverance, transformation, and good fortune in Japanese culture. The carving, executed by the artist Kōun, flows gracefully along the body of the vase, capturing the fluid movement and subtle dynamism of the fish in water. The form and casting of the vase are the work of Hannya Kankei (b. 1933), the fourth-generation master of the prestigious Hannya family foundry, founded in Takaoka in 1870. Hannya Kankei entered the family workshop in 1950 and rose to prominence as one of Japan’s most celebrated traditional metal artisans. He has received numerous awards, including First Prize at the Japan Kogei Exhibition (1973), and multiple accolades at the Traditional Crafts Japan Exhibition (1971–1985). In 2001 and 2005, he was commissioned by the Imperial Household Agency to recreate historical bronze pieces from the Shōsōin, the revered treasure house of Tōdai-ji Temple in Nara—a rare honor highlighting his exceptional skill and national recognition. The vase is accompanied by its original signed wooden tomobako (presentation box), certifying its authenticity and artistic provenance.
