About the Item

A beautiful, relatively large free form modernist abstract vase with indentations by famed Japanese Hawaiian American pottery master Toshiko Takaezu. The high-fired vase features a striking multi-colored minimalist drip glaze over a lightly glazed off white porcelain body. It is a unique and one-of-a-kind work. A quite rare shape for her. The vase is signed on the base with her traditional "TT" mark/ monogram. From a large Hawaiian collection of a long term client and friend of hers. A rare and special piece. Would be a great addition to any collectors of Toshiko's work or other Mid-Century Modern/Hawaiian/Japanese art potters or an eye-catching stand-alone work in about any setting. Gorgeous overall with a very Wabi-Sabi feel and abstract design. Takaezu was designated a living treasure in Hawaii in 1987. Her work can be found in numerous collections and museums worldwide including: Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, Massachusetts Allentown Art Museum, Allentown, Pennsylvania Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, Maryland Bloomsburg University, Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio Canton Museum of Art, Canton, Ohio Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, Ohio Currier Museum of Art, Manchester, New Hampshire Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, Michigan Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, New York Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, San Francisco, California Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery, Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, New York Harn Museum of Art, Gainesville, Florida Hunter Museum of American Art, Chattanooga, Tennessee Hunterdon Art Museum, Clinton, New Jersey Grounds for Sculpture, Hamilton, New Jersey Hawaii State Art Museum, Honolulu, Hawaii High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia, Honolulu Museum of Art, Honolulu, Hawaii Kresge Art Museum, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, California Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, New York Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee, Wisconsin Museum of Arts and Design, New York, New York Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas Newark Museum, Newark, New Jersey New Jersey State Museum, Trenton, New Jersey Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Princeton University Art Museum, Princeton, New Jersey Racine Art Museum, Racine, Wisconsin Seattle Art Museum, Seattle, Washington Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C. Ceramic Vase with Bespoken Glaze by Makoto Yabe
By Makoto Yabe
Located in Atlanta, GA
Made by Japanese ceramic artist Makoto Yabe (1947-2005), this stoneware vase features a globular body supported by a round pedestal foot. A similarly shaped neck extends to a rimmed mouth opening. Robust in form with thick wall, the vase is noted for its irregular cloved form. The surface is covered in a beige-yellow glaze, on top of which, dark brown strokes and thick white feldspar slip were artistically applied in a splashed and washed pattern. Together with some random shallow incision lines, they form an abstract painting with textured surface where some slip forms small droplets at the end of the stroke. The work was created in traditional Japanese manner and reflects the beauty of Wabi Sabi, a Zen aesthetic for the imperfect perfection. The base was incised with the artist's cipher. "Makoto Yabe's work beautifully exemplifies the transmission of Japanese ceramics to the West. Born in Fukushima, Japan, Yabe began studying ceramics in Kyoto at the age of nine. He completed his training at the age of 24, with a four-year apprenticeship under Jinmatsu Uno and Sango Uno. Yabe then came to Boston, where he was an integral member of the local ceramic community, yet he maintained his Japanese roots. As an instructor of ceramics, Yabe worked in the Boston area at numerous schools and universities, touching the lives of all his students and expanding their knowledge and appreciation of studio ceramics."
