WMF Silvered Metal & Cut Glass Centerpiece

About the Item

A stunning WMF silvered metal & cut glass centerpiece in the Neo Classical style. The tripod stand cast with Classical motifs such as floral swags, Gryphons, paterae, scrollwork, beading and lion paw feet. The interior is gilt washed. The stand supports a cut glass bowl with a shaped rim. The triangular base is engraved in the three sections with the date 1907, 'Marquette-en-Ostrevant' (an area in Northern France) and 'Coupe des Hunters'. Presumably this would mean the centerpiece was presented in France as a hunting trophy in 1907. The underside of the stand is impressed with the number '917' as well as the WMF mark of an ostrich within a lozenge, the letters 'OX' which indicates the silver plating was oxidised during the process and 'I/O' which indicates the standard thickness of plating used by WMF WMF stands for Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik which translated, means Wurtemberg Metalware Factory. It was founded in Germany circa 1880.
