Susse Frères / Hippolyte Gautruche - Art Nouveau Gilt Bronze 'Oignon' Vase

About the Item

An elegant gilt bronze vase modelled in the form of a sprouting onion. The body represented as layered onion with an elongated neck opening up to a ti-lobed rim cast and cold painted to represent the onion flower/seed head. The base modelled with a coiled onion root. The vase was designed by artist Hippolyte Gautruche. This example while not signed, is a documented model by Gautruche and some examples are found bearing both his name, and the marks of the original founders - Susse Frères, Paris. This example only bears the incised signature "Susse Fr. Edts. Paris" as well as a cachet stamp "Susse Frères Editions Paris". The Susse Frères foundry was an important Parisian foundry dating back to the mid 19th Century. They produced high quality bronze castings of sculptures, decorative arts & decorative elements for a number of noted artists, sculptors and manufacturers.
