1960s Mid-Century Modern handcrafted large freeform ashtray bowl centerpiece. Handmade beautiful Volcanic Raku Lava Bowl by Hutch Ceramics Maui, Hawaii Volcano Crater Bowl. Ceramic bowl made to imitate different types of lava, made by Hutch Ceramics in Maui; made by raku techniques; inside is glazed and colored blue and black with some crazing, the outside is made to look like cooled lava. Inspired by the crystal blue Hawaiian waters. Outer layers is made of lava, and the smooth bottom is panhoehoe lava. The three textures represent three forms of lava. Handcrafted large art studio pottery inspired by nature, design is in shades of blue and grey glazes sculptural work. The work is tactile and visual, it is a tridimensional design glazed in blue and brown in the middle of the plate and on the edges in shades of grey where you can feel shapes like a sculpture. For Hawaiians, the lava and flames spewing from Kilauea volcano are the living expression of the Goddess Pele. The crater bowl offered here is a tribute to her beauty. The rough hewn outer edges of the bowl are her jagged, craggy a'a lava. The smooth inside bottom represents her pahoehoe lava. The glossy center represents the flashes of color as her glowing streams of lava react with cool ocean waves. This crater bowl is hand-formed using a unique process (called Raku) developed by artisans from Maui clay. The lava-like nature is a result of being pulled from a burning inferno at temperatures exceeding 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. The molten pieces are placed in pits filled with leaves and Koa wood shavings. Fire, smoke and raw elements react, ultimately solidifying the unique nature of each piece. There appears to be a little damage in a couple places at the outer edge of the bowl....small chips
