About the Item

Round Silver Two-Piece Saucière with Detachable Base, Gilded Inside, Swedish Late Empire 1830s. Silver stamps on the piece date the piece to 1831. A silver bowl used for serving sauce, made by Swedish late Empire-era silversmith Johan Petter Grönvall (Stockholm 1774-1843), known for rich Empire silver sets, including parts of the famed "Götiska servisen" (Gothic Table Service) presented to then Crown Prince, later King, Oscar I, son of Napoleon's war minister turned King of Sweden following the Napoleonic Wars. The bowl features a two-piece design, complete with a detachable base. It combines an Empire sensibility for striking forms with a sleek and refined use of material, blending the two to give the piece a timeless essence. In particular, the use of the gilt inside of the bowl gives the piece a sense of depth and attracts the eye. Wear consistent with age and use.
