About the Item

A very fine French 19th century neoclassical style silver-plated figural centerpiece, in the manner of Christofle and a design by Mathurin Moreau (French, 1822-1912). The circular ornately decorated base, the border cast with grapes, acanthus leaves and shells, supporting four scantily clad dancing muses representing 'Dance and Music'. The apron bearing a shield with a monogram, Paris, circa 1890. Measures: Height 11 3/4 inches (29.9 cm) Width 12 1/8 inches (30.8 cm) Depth 11 1/2 inches (29.2 cm) Charles Christofle (d. 1863) took over his brother-in-law's bijouterie-joaillerie 'Maison Calmette' in 1831, and changed its name to 'Société Charles Christofle & Cie'. Following the invention of electro-metallurgy techniques by the English firm Elkington & Co., Christofle turned away from jewellery and, from 1844, concentrated on the production of large-scale works in electroplate, solid silver and gilt-bronze. Shortly thereafter, Christofle was appointed Fournisseur officiel du Roi Louis-Philippe, and in 1855, Fournisseur de l'Empereur. Christofle supplied fine quality pieces, predominantly table-wares, to the various palaces and ministerial offices of Napoleon III. Charles was succeeded by his son Paul and his nephew Henri Bouilhet, and under their direction, the firm exhibited at the major international exhibitions throughout the 19th century. Mathurin Moreau (18 November 1822 – 14 February 1912) was a French sculptor in the academic style. Moreau was born in Dijon, first exhibited in the 1848 Salon, and finally received a medal of honor from the Salon in 1897. He was made mayor of the 19th arrondissement of Paris, and in 1912 had a street named in his honor. His father was the sculptor Jean-Baptiste-Louis-Joseph Moreau [fr] and his siblings included sculptors Hippolyte and Auguste Moreau.
