Grand Tour Marble and Bronze Tazza Urn Centrepiece
About the Item
Bronze Cast Stem
From our Decorative collection we are pleased to offer this Grand Tour Sarrancolin Marble Tazza Urn. The Grand Tour Tazza Urn of typical form composed from Sarrancolin marble and bronze. The Bowl of the Tazza Urn with a large rolled top rim with a slightly waisted bowl stood upon a reeded oyster fan spread column cast in bronze and finished with a Sarrancolin marble circular base. The Grand Tour Sarrancolin Marble Tazza Urn daters to the late 19th century circa 1880 and would have been available as a purchase for Touring parties experiencing Europe. The Tazza urn often referred to as Urn or vase is made from a multi-coloured Sarrancolin marble often named Variegated marble for its collection of colours.
Variegated marble having a pattern of different colours or marks. In contrast a standard marble vase would only contain one colour such as a white Carrara marble.
Sarrancolin (a commune in the Hautes-Pyrenees south-west France). Is an impressive stone with a multicoloured background coupled with reddish veins and green/grey inclusions make it a highly attractive marble.
Grand Tour The original so called grand tour period was a trip taken around Europe, typically undertaken by young men. The period began in the 17th century and went through to the late 18th century. Women over the age of 21 would occasionally partake, providing they were accompanied by a chaperone from their family. The Grand Tour was seen as an educational trip across Europe, usually starting in Dover, and would see young, wealthy travellers search for arts and culture. Those on The Grand Tour would often have a healthy supply of funds in order to enjoy themselves freely. Objects from each of the countries visited would be for sale to tourists partaking in the grand tour and for sale as a form of souvenir to educate and remember where they had visited.

Pheasant and Weasel
From our Sculpture collection, we are delighted to offer this French Bronze Pheasant by Jules Moigniez. The French Bronze of good scale cast with a large male Pheasant clambering upon a rocky outcrop startled by a Weasel hiding within the foliage. The Pheasant naturalistically cast with individual feathers visible, sharp claws and spurs above the foot. The Weasel sits hidden in the foliage visible from viewing the French Bronze from the side as it shocks the Pheasant. The French Bronze signed to the front left on a rock face J. Jules Moigniez (1835-1894) was born at Senlis, Oise, just north of Paris, France on the 28 May 1835 the son of a metal gilder. Moigniez studied under Paul Comoléra (1813-1890) a specialist Animalia sculptor. It is clear that Moigniez’s career in Animalia was passed down from his tutors specialism in Animalia and in particular birds. Moigniez father bought a foundry specifically to cast his son’s sculptures. This gave Moigniez a huge advantage compared to other artist as it greatly reduced his costs during manufacturing and increased productivity keeping the process in-house. Moigniez throughout his career became known for this Animalia sculptures...
