Mid Century Murano Art Glass Shell Bowl

About the Item

PRESENTING A LOVELY Mid Century Murano Art Glass Shell Bowl, in the Manner of Tosso or Martens. Made in Murano, Italy circa 1960 this is a beautiful piece of hand blown art glass in the shape and form of a clam shell with multi-colored translucent and thick/heavy art glass. The piece can act as either a bowl/centerpiece or ashtray. The rim edges are scalloped with 3 scalloped and curled sections, tapering down to a circular base. The edge of the top rim is red which transitions to orange, then yellow down to a gorgeous aqua colored translucent base. The piece is in great original condition with no chips or cracks. Some very minor surface scratches due to age, use and normal wear and tear, but not significant and in no way devalues the piece. No marked or signed but most definitely in the manner of Tosso or Martens who produced similar pieces in Murano at that time. MURANO GLASS: “Murano glass is glass made on the Venetian island of Murano, which has specialized in fancy glasswares for centuries. Murano’s glassmakers led Europe for centuries, developing or refining many technologies including crystalline glass, enamelled glass (smalto), glass with threads of gold (aventurine), multicolored glass (millefiori), milk glass (lattimo), and imitation gemstones made of glass. Today, the artisans of Murano are still employing these centuries-old techniques, crafting everything from contemporary art glass and glass figurines to Murano glass chandeliers and wine stoppers, as well as tourist souvenirs. Today, Murano is home to a vast number of factories and a few individual artists’ studios making all manner of glass objects from mass marketed stemware to original sculpture. The Museo del Vetro (Glass Museum) in the Palazzo Giustinian houses displays on the history of glassmaking as well as glass samples ranging from Egyptian times through the present day.” Provenance: Bought by us in Europe. Dimensions: 8 inches wide, 8 inches deep and 3.25 inches tall Condition: The piece is in great original condition with no chips or cracks. Some very minor surface scratches due to age, use and normal wear and tear, but not significant and in no way devalues the piece.
