Silver-plated tureen, liner and stand, late 19th century, Thomas Germain style
About the Item
Elegant silver-plated tureen with its removable liner and matching stand, crafted in the 20th century. The body features a central crowned coat of arms in high relief, framed by finely sculpted scrolls. Boar’s head handles add a striking sculptural element to the piece. The shaped stand is engraved with acanthus leaves and a central coat of arms surrounded by laurel swags.
This ensemble is a loose interpretation of a renowned tureen by Thomas Germain (1673–1748), the great Parisian silversmith of the Louis XV era also was the supplier to all the courts of Europe. Germain’s work exemplifies the grandeur and refinement of 18th-century French goldsmithing. While not an exact replica, this piece pays homage to the opulence and ornamental brilliance of the French Rococo style. The original tureen is housed in the Getty Museum, Los Angeles.
