About the Item
We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects.
Pretty and refined pair of small serving tureens; they have a well-proportioned, square design typical of Art Deco, graceful and pleasing floral decorations on the lid and body help to lighten the rigidity of the form; the rim and knob are ornamented in pure gold. On the bottom, we find the maker's mark: the famous Arthur J. Wilkinson Firm located on Newport Lane in Burslem, near Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire County, an ancient locality famous for the production of pottery and porcelain. From the mark, we can accurately identify the year of production of the two soup tureens: 1947. In 1881 the old Central factories in Burslem passed into the hands of Wilkinson & Hulme; in 1885 Hulme retired from the business and Arthur J. Wilkinson continued alone, AJ Wilkinson was the brother-in-law of Arthur Shorter, a partner in the pottery firm Shorter & Boulton. In 1891 AJ Wilkinson died in an accident and Arthur Shorter was asked to run AJ Wilkinson pottery in Burslem, the name AJ Wilkinson was retained. Around 1896 the company took over the Royal Staffordshire Pottery, Burslem, and soon left the old Central plants. A few years later Shorter bought the company and at that time, in 1898, Arthur's son Colley joined him. His younger son Guy, who became manager of Shorter's in 1900, joined his father and Colley from Wilkinson's in 1905. Colley and Guy Shorter were appointed managers of Wilkinsons in 1916. Also in 1916, at the age of 17, Clarice Cliff (who became the famous designer of "Bizarre Ware") began working at Wilkinson's - previously working for Hollinshead & Kirkham. In 1928 hand-painted Bizarre Ware was launched. With the outbreak of World War II in 1939, creative production at the factory ceased, with much of the workforce conscripted into the armed forces. Wartime restrictions on decorating ceramics would continue, and production declined sharply, but Wilkinson's equally maintained a high quality of products. In 1964 Colley Shorter died. Clarice Cliff-Shorter sold the family shares to the nearby Midwinter Co. and thus Wilkinson's ceased to exist. In 2021 the magnificent story of Wilkinson and revolutionary ceramic artist Clarice Cliff, an early exponent of Art Deco, is told in the film "The Color Room" directed by Claire McCarthy. Measures width cm.27, depth cm.23, height cm.15. Tureens are in good condition. For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (wooden crates, styrofoam, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.
