About the Item
Stig Lindberg was a Swedish visionary, a ceramicist, designer of glass and textiles, a painter and illustrator and an industrial designer. He was born in Umeå, Sweden in 1916 and became one of Sweden’s most important artists and postwar designers. His oeuvre is expansive, offering his open-minded and creative processes for the Gustavsberg pottery factory beginning in 1937 under the tutelage of Wilhelm Kåge (see our previous post!). He succeeded Kåge as art director in 1949 and vaulted himself into the forefront of progress. From this period until he left Gustavsberg in 1980, he designed individual ceramic items, as well as factory produced ranges and lines of dinnerware. Using his own popularity, he launched Gustavsberg into great heights of awareness. He was known for his whimsical choices, willingness for play and surrealistic notions alongside a steady regard for the classically modern and cutting edge. Never worrying about the distinction between art and design, he kept them in equal measure. His works can be seen at the MOMA in NY, the National Museum in Stockholm and many other international private and public collections. The artist died in 1982.
