Copeland-Spode Large Ironstone Platter in Chinese Figures pattern, Ca 1900

About the Item

This is a beautiful very large Platter or Meat Plate by Copeland (formerly Spode) in a very decorative hand painted Chinese figure pattern, dating to the turn of the late 19th Century, Circa 1900. The piece is well potted as a large rectangular plate or platter with bevelled corners. It is made of Ironstone pottery, named by Spode as Stone China The pattern depicts various Chinese figures holding flowers, both as a central theme and on four cartouches on the border, which has a diaper theme with four stylised Ruji head patterns at each corner. The pattern is carefully hand-painted, over-glaze with typical bold enamels over an under-glaze transfer printed outline. The base carries various marks; the printed Copeland-Spode, New Stone mark ( which is a copy of Spode's Stone China mark used in the early 19th Century plus an impressed COPELAND mark. The "England" on the printed mark dates this piece post 1891 and we date this piece circa 1900. Overall a very distinctive large platter for use or display and in superb condition.
