About the Item

We kindly encourage you to carefully read the description below, which provides detailed technical and historical information to ensure the authenticity of our artifacts. This set includes five exquisite ceramic plates, hand-decorated with intricate cobalt blue motifs on a white background: Three plates have a diameter of 30 cm. Two of them feature a central design of a small bird surrounded by flowers and vine patterns, with distinct border decorations. The third plate displays a central star encircled by a floral border. The other two plates, with a diameter of 33 cm, showcase a pomegranate motif framed by vine patterns in the center, each complemented by unique decorative borders. Each plate is exclusively hand-painted and faithfully reproduces traditional Umbrian designs from the 18th century. These pieces were crafted between 1950 and 1954 in a small artisanal workshop in Deruta (Perugia, Italy). The ceramic material used is a rough-textured clay body (visible on the backs of the plates, as shown in the photos), which is characteristic of Deruta's ceramic tradition. The entire production process is carried out entirely by hand. While the origins of Deruta's pottery-making are not precisely known, it is well-documented that by the Middle Ages, the town was renowned for its high-quality ceramic production. The earliest written references to Deruta pottery date back to 1282. During the Renaissance, Deruta boasted more than fifty kilns, where celebrated artists such as Perugino, Pinturicchio, and Luca Signorelli collaborated. The exceptional craftsmanship of Deruta's ceramic artisans has endured through the centuries. In the early 20th century, a consortium was formed to unite the majority of local workshops, ensuring the quality of the ceramics produced. An official trademark, "Ceramiche Deruta," was also introduced, although individual artisans often chose not to sign their works, confident that Deruta ceramics were easily recognizable by their unique and distinctive style. Our plates are in good condition. On the bottom of each plate (as shown in red in the photos), you can observe three small marks that may resemble chips. These are actually the imprints left by the iron supports used during the firing process and subsequent cooling in small ventilated chambers, where the colors were permanently fixed. Dimensions: Two plates: 33 cm diameter, 4 cm height. Three plates: 30 cm diameter, 4 cm height. For all shipments, we use specialized packaging materials, including wooden crates, styrofoam, and other protective elements, to ensure the utmost safety and security of the items during transport.

Staffordshire Potteries English Tray with Blue Transferware Decorations
By Clementson Brothers
Located in Prato, Tuscany
We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Lovely and refined English oval ceramic tray; elegant and rich blue decorations have been executed on the white background using the transferware method; the mark on the back tells us exactly that the object was produced by the Clementson Brothers LTD Company between 1901 and 1913 at the Phoenix factory in Shelton, the company made a wide range of objects with this decoration called "Delf" ( see mark no.909 p.150 of "Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Mark"). Transferware, which was very fashionable in the Victorian period, refers to glazed and decorated pottery with a specific treatment that they produced in Staffordshire, England; they used copper plates on which the design was engraved, the plate was then inked and the design transferred to a special fabric that was later placed on the pottery (plates, trays, tureens, etc.) which was glazed and fired; the first to use this printing process were John Sadler and Guy Green of Liverpool in 1756. If we look at the pottery made by this method we will notice that the designs are not perfect and often the ink is smudged: this is their characteristic. A hand-painted plate service could afford few English families, with this method even middle-class families could have a decorated plate service. The Clementson Firm was founded in 1839 by Joseph Clementson, who retired from the business in 1867, leaving the factory to his four sons and son...
