About the Item
This is a large and impressive hand painted Cider Mug or Tankard made by Mason's Ironstone, England, with a very early date in the Georgian period, circa 1815.
These very early large cider mugs / tankards are quite rare.
The mug is octagonal in profile with a lovely flared base and a dragon loop handle. The floral oriental inspired, Chinoiserie pattern is one of the earliest Mason's patterns called the "Vase and Jardinière" pattern, with very bold hand painted enamels
This piece is fully marked to the base with both an under-glaze blue printed crown, wide spaced M A S O N S mark and the circular impressed mark reading 'Patent Ironstone China'
This circular impressed mark is one of the earliest Mason's Ironstone marks indicating a very early date of 1813 to 1815, the initial years of ironstone production, which started in 1813.
