Germany Blue Vase 525, Scheurich Ceramic 60's

About the Item

Gorgeous vase with a glazed border from the German manufacturer Scheurich Keramik. Made of glazed ceramic, this vase features an elongated and stylized silhouette, with a body that tapers toward the center, reminiscent of the shape of a bottle. The exterior finish of the ceramic is beige with a striated texture, evoking a rustic, handcrafted look. The interior features a glossy black glaze. The most striking feature is the central decorative frieze: a band of turquoise blue glaze decorated with a wavy black pattern, dotted with small coral red dots, which add a vibrant touch. The chromatic contrast between the earthy base and the brightly colored details of the border creates an interesting visual dichotomy. About Fat Lava and Scheurich Keramik: Fat Lava pottery is one of the most iconic styles of mid-20th-century German design, characterized by its volcanic textures, dense glazes, and bold shapes. Key to the incorporation of organic shapes and modernist geometries through the use of glaze is the aim of recreating hardened lava flows, mineral bubbles, and abstract landscapes. Scheurich Keramik, one of the most prolific manufacturers of the period known as West German Pottery (WGP), was instrumental in the development and popularization of this style. The company was founded in 1923 in Germany and began selling porcelain and crystal tableware wholesale. It wasn't until the 1950s that Scheurich began producing ceramics. In the 1960s, the “Fat Lava” era began with thickly textured drip glazes and bubbling crater glazes that created the lava effect. Until the 1980s, Scheurich was the largest ceramics manufacturer in West Germany. The five digits engraved on the bases of the vases indicate the shape and size. For example, in the digits 525-50, the “525” represents the shape, while the “50” indicates that the vase is 50 cm tall. More recent ceramics have a three-circle mark engraved on the bases of the pieces. Scheurich remains one of the leading German ceramics producers today. Atelier CERENNE RENE NEVEUX VALLAURIS 50s French Ceramic Abstract pair plate
Located in Valladolid, ES
A bold and evocative abstract design decorates this mid century sculptural pair of plates from the Atelier Cerenne founded by Charles Rene Neveux in Vallauris, France in the commune of Vence. Signed verso, this gorgeous example of ceramic artistry is a tour de force of quality, restraint and style. The strong black ground is heightened by the incised white outline and further added to by the use of red, blue, yellow and green and 2 fish . Charles Rene Neveux founded the Atelier Cerenne in 1945 and it was active up through 1958 when it was sold. The atelier was best known for the small and high end production runs that produced such beautiful objects as the one here. It has been said that the Atelier Cerenne takes its name from the contraction of the founders name, Charles Rene Neveux. For a bit of history on Vallauris, here's a tidbit from the Perfectly Provence website: "Vallauris Golfe-Juan – “city of 100 potters” – is a tourist town on the French Riviera between Antibes and Cannes. Its name (Valauria in Provencal) means “the golden valley.” Divided into two parts; the old centre of Vallauris, and the seaside section running from the port along the Côte d’Azur, towards Antibes... However, 20th-century modernization brings with it a decline in artisanal pottery activity in Vallauris. After WWII, Picasso gives a new impetus to the pottery of Vallauris when he chooses to settle in the city. Like a magnet, the presence of Picasso draws...
