About the Item

Sculptural wall mounted mirror features glazed ceramic frame with Arts and Crafts style relief decor. Minimal, Organic Modern palette of mocha and latte brown semi-matte glaze does not distract from the hand-sculpted geometric design and rich texture of the piece. The mirror is signed on the back with the stamp that was used by Michael Cohen in 1960s, allowing us to confidently date the piece; he started signing his work with the "Cohen Pottery" stamp in 1973. Michael Cohen received his BFA in 1957 Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, Massachusetts, with Charles Abbott as a mentor, followed up with a year-long Fellowship, Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, in 1959. In 1961 Cohen opened his studio in Newton, Massachusetts, making sculptures and functional objects. Shortly after, he moved to a shared space with the potter William Wyman at Herring Run Pottery in East Weymouth. Since 1973, Cohen has been working at his large studio in Amherst, Massachusetts, focusing primarily on tile making with his son. Cohen's work is in collections of DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, Lincoln, MA, Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, NY; Fuller Craft Museum, Brockton, MA, Jack Lenor Collection, Longhouse Foundation, Easthampton, NY, Museum of Arts and Design, New York, NY, Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY, Objects USA, Johnson Collection, Racine, WI, Wichita Art Museum, Wichita, KS, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MI, and Victoria and Albert Museum, London UK.
