About the Item
Important and rare Art Deco bookends designed by Albert Drexler Jacobson(1895-1973). Fantastic modern and geometric shapes with three color glaze combinations that truly make this set extra special and a worthy collectors piece. This bookend design is only one of two, the other being the cogwheels, that Jacobson created for Cowan.
The beak of the pelican is in a highly prized black semi-matte glaze. The head, body and the bottom half of beak are in a bronze metallic glaze. The eyes & gular pouch of the pelicans are in a silver metallic glaze. The metallic finishes were seldom used in Cowan pieces. Movement is noted as well. When placed back to back the pelican starts off asleep then becoming awake. This movement is symbolic of a new age through knowledge(books in the middle of bookends) Man, ideas, style and machine moving into a new era, a modern era.
The exceptional bookends reflect the era of modernism. Clean geometric lines with colors that acknowledge the machine age metals used. Steel, chrome, iron, bronze, copper, aluminum, silver and gold. The silver and bronze glazes with lighting give metallic hues. The bookends truly evoke the Art Deco movement.
Albert Jacobson Drexler was born in New York into a family of artists and musicians, studied at the Beaux Arts School of Design, the Art Students League and in Paris and Rome, witnessing the beginning of the modern art movement.
He won countless prizes in major exhibitions and his works are in the permanent collection of the Utica Museum of Art, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Rocky River Public Library, the Royal Ontario Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago and in many private collections. Bookends by Drexler are hard to come by. The "E-864" tri color model combination are highly desirable art deco period art.
