Rare Georgian PAIR of Mason's Ironstone Vases in Elephant Foot Pattern, Ca 1820

About the Item

This is a rare pair of very decorative Vases in the Elephant's Foot pattern, made by Mason's Ironstone, of Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, in the early 19th century, circa 1820 The vases have a baluster shape raised on a circular ring knopped foot, with a slightly flaired upper rim and high loop handles terminating in a Lions head. One vase is slightly taller than the other. Both pieces are profusely and richly hand- decorated with bold enamels of cobalt blue, burnt orange, red, and salmon, all in different shades with much additional gilded detail. The pattern is the Stocking Pattern but is generally known as the "Elephant's Foot" pattern, as illustrated on Page 117 of " A Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns", published by the Mason's Collectors' Club. The vases could have been used for Pot Pourri and may have had lids originally. These vases are heavy for their size, indicative of the earliest pieces. They are unmarked to the bases as is often the case with Mason's pieces of this type and age but they are definitely Mason's Ironstone pieces with similar pieces and the pattern shown in the books; Mason's The first Two Hundred Years, by Gaye Blake Roberts and also in Godden's Guide to Mason's China and the Ironstone Wares, by Geoffrey a Godden. Please note, the larger vase has some prior damage - there are old fine stable hairline cracks to the body on both sides which are hard to see but shown in the final two images. The other vase is damage free. We would not normally list damaged pieces but these are very rare pieces with a very decorative pattern and display really well.

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor structural damages. No Restoration No Chips One vase has old stable tight hairline cracks to the body as follows; I x star hairline to one side and one hairline to the other side. Please see final two images. Some loss to the gilding from use, as normal.
