Stoneware "Green Relief" Teapot by J.H. Quistgaard for Kronjyden, Denmark, 1960s

About the Item
Extremely rare "green relief" teapot by Jens Harald Quistgaard in soneware with handle of brass and cane wicker. Made at "Kronjyden" Pottery in the 1960s. The relief dinnerware was made in large numbers in the standard light brown glazing, but the green glazing is only found on very few examples. This teapot is the largest in the relief series and is in perfect condition. A collectors item.
The dinnerware design “Relief” by Jens Quistgaard for "Kronjyden Nissen, Denmark" has become a classic and coveted design since its introduction in 1959. It was designed at the beginning of a long and productive relationship between Quistgaard and Kronjyden Nissen and resulted in a series of outstanding designs. “Relief” is a matte glazed stoneware, in a wheat or ochre colour featuring a stylised wheat-sheaf repeat pattern. Handles of some of the teapots, sugar bowls etc. feature rattan wrapped brass handles – very popular at the time.
After the second world war, Jens Harald Quistgaard was apprenticed in the Georg Jensen Solvsmedie in Copenhagen. He has experimented with various media such as wood, metal, glass, steel and ceramics. Ted Nierenberg, the founder of Dansk International, noticed him because of his distinctively Danish craft aesthetic. He worked for him for 30 years, starting in 1954. Quistgaard has received public recognition with six prizes in the Milan Triennali, winning both the Lunning Prize in 1954 and the Scandinavian Award.

First, this pair was produced under supervision by Sergio in his own factory in Brazil - but - exclusively for the US market, distributed for a very short time by Brazilian Interiors in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In the gallery of this listing is a photo of the Brazilian Interiors catalogue that displays this model and confirms production was supervised by Sergio in his own factory in Brazil. The unique attribute on this pair of 'Tonico' lounge chairs is the addition of paddle arms whereas normal production of the Tonico design was without armrests. This addition adds greater comfort to these already incredibly comfortable chairs. Secondly, 'Tonico' lounge chairs, loveseats and sofas are already incredibly rare - this pair with paddle arms are even more exceptionally rare and special. Of Sergio's designs, the 'Tonico' line is the most sought after by collectors and art collectors - this pair possesses greater rarity and also have the additional value of provenance which makes them much more valuable and desirable for collectors over the typical Tonico chairs...Category
