Two Rare Ejvind Nielsen (1916-1988) Danish Studio Ceramic Vases

About the Item

Highly sought-after by collectors of Mid-Century studio pottery, the vessel work of Ejvind Nielsen is characterized by simple forms and subtle glazes in natural tones, which often blend and bleed together to create a rich and soothing look. Nielsen is also known for his exotic and colorful animal tiles, made in collaboration with his wife, Lizzi Nielsen. These two petite flower vases feature a conical form, with thick variegated blue glazes over a reddish earthenware clay base. Applied liberally, the blue glazes create an undulating, rippled texture reminiscent of water - with areas of thinner glaze creating a blue-green affect when laid over the clay ground. Born in Denmark in 1916, Nielsen spent time in England in the 1930's before serving as a volunteer during the Spanish Civil War. He established his own pottery studio in Hvidovre, Denmark, in 1943; the studio remained open until the mid-1980's.
