About the Item

Pair of Belle Époque Gilt Glass Compotes/Dessert Dishes, circa 1890–1910 Dimensions: 5.25 in. diameter x 2.5 in. high; Base: 2.75 in. diameter A refined pair of Belle Époque hand-gilt glass compotes or dessert dishes, dating to the late 19th–early 20th century. Each low-footed bowl is exquisitely decorated with a continuous band of golden grape clusters, scrolling vines, and broad vine leaves, bordered by gilt rims that accentuate the clarity and brilliance of the glass. The interior well is further enriched with a stylized rosette, while the foot is encircled by a complementary garland of vines, creating a harmonious design that celebrates the pleasures of the table. The grapevine motif, long a symbol of abundance, festivity, and conviviality, is particularly appropriate for compotes, which were traditionally used for serving fruit, puddings, or ice creams during formal dinners. Such decoration reflects both Classical revival themes and the naturalistic elegance favored during the Belle Époque. Comparable examples were produced by leading European glasshouses such as Moser (Bohemia), Baccarat, and St. Louis (France), all renowned for their mastery of gilded and enameled luxury glassware. While unmarked, this pair is of the same exceptional quality. Condition: Excellent antique condition with bright gilding and only light, age-appropriate wear. Provenance: Private collection, likely European.
