This is a dessert plate made by Spode in about 1822, which was the Regency era. The plate is made of Felspar porcelain and decorated with a beautiful hand painted landscape scene. The plate would have belonged to a large dessert service of which each piece had a unique landscape; in fact I sold a dessert service in this pattern a while ago.
Spode was the great pioneer among the Georgian potters in England. Around the year 1800 he perfected the bone china recipe that has been used by British potters ever since, and he was also the leading potter behind the technique of transferware, making it possible for English potters to replace the Chinese export china...

Provenance : Jerome Schottenstein Estate, Columbus Ohio. Jerome was was an American entrepreneur and philanthropist, co-founder of Schottenstein Stores Corp. The Schottenstein family were Lithuanian immigrants who began an extensive business empire in the late 19th Century. Schottenstein Stores owns stakes in DSW and American Signature Furniture; American Eagle Outfitters, retail liquidator SB360 Capital Partners, over 50 shopping centers, and 5 factories producing its shoes and furniture. It also holds an ownership interest in American Eagle Outfitters, Wehmeyer in Germany, Cold Stone Creamery and The Mazel Company.
These superb quality Minton plates are from a dessert service shown at the International Exhibition of 1862 in London.
The plates testify to the enduring influence of 18th Century Sèvres on the tastes of Victorian high society. The designs are far from being mere copies, however; while there are recognisable Sèvres elements, they are arranged in entirely new and delightful ways.
On the rim are four imitation cameo heads of classical deities en grisaille on a red-brown ground, within oval reserves wreathed in laurel. The profiles are individually painted; compare, for instance, the winged helmeted heads of Hermes/Mercury and you will spot subtle differences. The cameo devices, used here for the first time by Minton, derive from the celebrated Sèvres dinner...

The Sèvres factory of soft-paste porcelain was created, about 1738 at Vincennes by bankers and financiers with the aim of making true or “hard-paste” porcelain, like Meissen did. In 1753 Louis XV, became a major shareholder and the manufactory was transferred to Sèvres, closer to Versailles and the château de Bellevue, acquired by the Marquise de Pompadour. This set of antique Flight Barr Barr Worcester dessert dishes are marked with an impressed crown over "FBB," showing that Flight Barr Barr was a purveyor to their Royal Majesties, the King and Queen of England.
Made in England circa 1820, they are decorated in Worcester's "Strawberry" pattern. The dishes are painted in rich gold with strawberries on the palest peach ground. The color is subtle, and the design is elegant. The combination is superb.
In the Regency period, the "Strawberry" pattern was the height of fashion for the table.
