About the Item

Two Signature Black buffet plates designed by Richard Meier for Swid Powell in the 1980’s. Meier was at the peak of his career during this time, having designed the much lauded High Museum Of Art in Atlanta, Georgia which opened in 1984. Apparently Meier designed the Signature Black plate over lunch with Nan Swid. He scrawled out two lines on a piece of paper and handed it to Swid. She was impressed with the simplicity and strength of the design, and put it into immediate production. The plates measure approximately 12 inches in diameter and 1 1/4 inches high at the lip. All the plates are fully marked on the bottom. Even though not indicated, research suggest the plates were manufactured in Japan. Richard Meier was on born October 12, 1934. Meier is an American abstract artist, designer and architect. A winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1984, Meier has designed several iconic buildings including the Barcelona Museum Of Contemporary Art, the Getty Center in Los Angeles, the High Museum Of Art in Atlanta, and the San Jose City Hall. In New York City, Meier worked briefly in 1959 for Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, and then for three years for Marcel Breuer before starting his own firm in 1963. Today, Richard Meier & Partners Architects has offices in New York and Los Angeles, with projects ranging from China and Tel Aviv to Paris and Hamburg. Richard Meier started a collaboration with Swid Powell (American, 1982–2001) in 1982 designing home furnishings. The plates offered were part of the design collaboration. The plate design is represented in museum collections such as Yale University.
