About the Artisan
William Beilby (1740 – 8 October 1819) was an English glassworker who produced eminent and important enamelled glass during the later half of the 18th century.
Beilby's father William senior was a goldsmith and jeweller in Durham. Beilby, along with his brothers Richard, Ralph and Thomas were sent to grammar school during their childhood. Richard and Beilby, the oldest two, later went as apprentices to Birmingham, the former learning seal engraving and the latter enamelling and drawing. Beilby and his sister Mary (1749–97) worked as enamellers for local glass makers.
The Beilby family of Newcastle that included William, Richard and Mary were all very talented glass decorators who learned the technique to fire enamels onto glass and worked for different factories in the Newcastle area.
Their decorative repertoire ranged across various categories from simple white enamel floral or avian motifs, painted around the bowl of small cylindrical bowled wine or cordial glasses to more complex classical architectural vignettes to armorials in polychrome enamels.
