About the Item

A fabulous and cute Art Nouveau Candia (gold on clear) Papillon (Butterfly wing) vase. This iridised finish was first created by Loetz in 1898 and dates to around that period. The vase is circular and has a well polished pontil and hot finished top Papillon was made in candia, crete, cobalt, dark blue, opal, orange, ruby or yellow ground, each marvered with silvery-yellow (oil spot) granules -giving a butterfly wing type effect -it was quite revolutionary at the time. The Candia colouring, as in this example, was clearly the most popular design. Loetz was and still is probably the most famous and most collected of the great Bohemian glass makers. The last but one image shows the vase with other Loetz vases, not included in this sale but available in our other listings
