About the Item

Exceptional hand-wrought Salvador Teran mosaic and brass pitcher with opposing hands and three button design in classic black & white. I appreciate this piece for the exceptional craftsmanship as well as for the design. The art tile design reminds me that of a butler or Boris Karloffs' hands in Frankenstein. Before opening his business, he trained in William Spratling’s workshop in his hometown of Taxco, Mexico. He left Spratling’s shop with his cousins Antonio, Jorge, Miguel, and Justo Castillo in 1939 to form Los Castillo, also in Taxco, where he worked for more than a decade. Terán is credited for many of the early designs of Los Castillo, although that work was done without individual credit. However, his talents become abundantly evident when examining the jewelry and other decorative objects, such as serving pieces and wall mosaics he designed and crafted in his shop. He employed 25 silversmiths who helped him carry out his unique vision of Mexican cultural motifs as they were incorporated into wares bearing his name. The objects produced in the Terán workshop sold well and were recognized for their quality and craftsmanship when they were new as they are today. His work was featured in an exhibit titled “William Spratling & the Mexican Silver Renaissance” that originated at the San Antonio Museum of Fine Arts in Texas and traveled to many other museum venues in the early 2000s. After a long and successful career, Terán died in 1974.
