Antique Floral Etched Glass and Sterling Claret Jug

About the Item

Antique claret jug / pitcher featuring an etched grapes and vines design on 6 panels of the pitcher the back has 2 panels that are plain. The etching is beautiful similar to Moser in style and quality. The mounted sterling collar and spout are by Alvin Sterling Company. The handle has a wonderful thumping design which makes it easy to hold. Signed on the collar with Sterling numbers and Alvin's early hallmark. MANUFACTURER: The Alvin Silver Manufacturing Company was founded during the latter part of the 19th century. Their original headquarters in 1886 was located in New Jersey. Historical records reference multiple names for this manufacturer, including The Alvin Silver Manufacturing Company, The Alvin Mfg Co., Alvin Silver Co., and The Alvin Corporation.

A fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver mounted, cut glass claret jug, an addition to our wine and drink related collection. This fine antique Victorian sterling silver and cut glass claret jug has a circular rounded, globular form. The cylindrical neck is fitted with a fine and impressive plain sterling silver hallmarked mount with the original hallmarked flat hinged cover. The cover is surmounted with a simplified tri-lobed silver thumb piece. This antique claret jug is fitted with a plain angular rounded handle with scrolling upper terminal and featuring a leaf ornamentation to the lower portion. The glass body of the jug is embellished with a cut glass swirl design to either side, conjoining with undulating bands to the circumference. The body of this impressive claret jug is further ornamented with a star cut base. Condition This antique sterling silver and glass claret jug is an exceptional gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent condition. The glass is in perfect condition. Full hallmarks struck to the surface and part hallmarks to the cover have wear due to their location and in keeping with age; the maker's mark to the cover and the mount are not deeply struck but remain legible.
