Antique Staffordshire Pearlware Shepherd & Sheep Ribbon Plate
About the Item
A very fine antique English Staffordshire pearlware blue and white plate decorated with a shepherd with his sheep dating from around 1820. The lightly potted plate is of round shape with a raised edge with a flat rim applied with openwork loops around the rim. These were often to allow a ribbon decoration to be fed through the loops and are sometimes referred to as ribbon plates and probably more for decoration than practical use. The plate has a very fine molded basket weave design to the rim with blue and white decoration to looped edge and with a scene of a shepherd seated below a tree and playing a pipe with his dog close by and watching a flock of grazing sheep. The plate is not marked.
Provenance: acquired in the British Art Market.
In good condition with some minor age wear with a few minor glaze scuffs to the underside of the rim and with a short edge hairline visible underneath the looped edging.
