This Art Deco style ceramic pitcher, designed by Colin Melbourne for Beswick, England, is a bold example of mid-century modernist design. Originally conceived by Beswick ceramicist Mr. Symcox in the 1920s, this form was reworked in the 1960s by Melbourne, whose sculptural approach brought a graphic, architectural quality to British ceramics.
The pitcher’s modernist silhouette features a softly rounded body, a tubular neck, and a dramatic wedge-shaped spout, reminiscent of a ship’s bow. The sweeping curved handle, with its linear elegance, evokes the abstract compositions of Wassily Kandinsky.
Decorated in turquoise and black zebra-like stripes, this distinctive glazing style became a hallmark of Colin Melbourne’s work for Beswick, often appearing in variations across his designs. The soft matte finish subtly diffuses light, emphasizing the pitcher’s sculptural presence.
Stamped "Beswick England" and numbered 148 on the base. This pitcher measures 22 cm in height and 14 cm in diameter and comes in very good condition.
A visually striking yet functional work of ceramic art, it embodies the principles of Modernism, seamlessly integrating circles, triangles, and dynamic lines into a cohesive, expressive form.
