About the Item

Rare black Oliver water jug or pitcher is a part of Storybirds series that was designed in 1993 by Kati Tuominen-Niittyla (b. 1947), an internationally acclaimed ceramic artist living and working in Helsinki, Finland, and manufactured from 1995 to 1998 by Arabia Finland. Made of glazed, high-fired ceramic, Storybirds featured four sculptural designs, each resembling an abstract bird with a spout as its beak. Storybirds series was awarded Distinction at the Finland Designs 1993 and 1994 Ambiente Frankfurt, competitions; it is currently in the collection of the V&A Museum. The combination of monochromatic black glaze and unusual, architectural shape creates a playful, whimsical piece that is not only functional, but also an eye-catching decorative element for the interiors. Oliver jug is 12.75" high with 3.18" diameter body; it is marked with Arabia Finland Storybirds sticker at the base. The pitcher is in excellent vintage condition.
