About the Item

"Sleepy Eye" stoneware pitchers were promotional items used to advertise The Sleepy Eye Flour Milling Company, in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. The factory was built in 1883 and remained in operation until it went into receivership in 1909, at which point it struggled under different ownership until it finally went out of business in 1921. Chief Sleepy Eye was a Sioux Indian chief in the Minnesota area who lived 1780-1860, and was known for his characteristic droopy eyelid, thus the name, (Sleepy Eye); and immortality was created by having his indelible image in raised relief appearing on these pitchers in blue and white. Teepees and trees, in deep cobalt blue complete the decoration. The "Sleepy Eye" logo appeared on other items the flour company used for promotion as well. These pitchers were sold and given away as premiums, consequently, they were not made of fine porcelain or intended to grace the tables and kitchens of royalty, but rather, every day middle Americans. That is why they are typically found with chips and hairlines here and there. There are copious amounts of reissues, some having been made until quite recently. The disparity in pricing is due to the preponderance of these reproductions. Even without an understanding of antique pottery, there are several ways to identify a "repro". The Weir Pottery Company, Monmouth, Illinois, was probably the manufacturer of these pitchers, and would have been subcontracted by the Sleepy Eye Milling Company. They were in business until 1905, at which point they were taken over by the Western Stoneware company. There were five sizes in all, and these pitchers represent one of each. Sizes were 4", 5 1/4", 6 1/2", 8", and 9". (Allow a 1/4" variable). The following is a condition report for each pitcher. 1) The largest 8 3/4" high x 6 7/8" (base) (width at top end of lip to handle= 9"). Nice crazing and patina throughout; slight superficial 1" hairline at the top lip; 1/2" chip to clay underneath (see image) 2) 8" x 6" (base). No notable flaws 3) 6 1/2" x 5" (base). Two hair lines to the rear of pitcher starting at top; darker one is 1 5/8"; other is 1 1/4". Ever so slight chip to top lip on side. nice aged crazing to base (underneath) and nice patina throughout. 4) 5 1/4" x 4" (base). Just about flawless; nice patina and crazing throughout. "Monmouth" marking at the base indicates Weir Pottery Company (located in Monmouth, Illinois). 5) 4" x 3" (base) One hairline from top of pouring lip down the front; another ever so slight to the side; a small chip to front lip (see image). All in all this is a very sound set with no repairs and no touch up paint; the handles are very sound with no structural damage of any kind. A wonderful addition to the collector of blue and white pottery, a Western collector, or those who collect Sleepy Eye items.   Note: I am a second generation antiques dealer and have been in business for 50 years; I am also a member of several prestigious antique associations. Thus, I am well qualified to inspect and evaluate the products I offer for sale and I guarantee this to be authentic and as I have described.

Six Piece "Mason's Ironstone" Toiletry Set, English, circa 1835
By Mason's Ironstone
Located in Incline Village, NV
Outstanding and rare early 19th century Mason's Ironstone (6) piece set consisting of toilet necessities as follows: Large oversized highly decorated pitcher and bowl for storing water and wash basin Pair of chamber pots for evening needs Similarly decorated toothbrush holder, large enough for multiple users Soap dish with removable strainer dish The fact that this rare ensemble has survived intact with no damage for nearly two hundred years is remarkable. It would have been an item owned and cherished by the aristocracy. and enjoyed as an art form because of it's high quality manufacture, in addition to the elaborate and detailed decoration. Also of note is the 8 sided octagonal form of each of the six items (see images). Please observe the elaborate serpent or snake formed handles to the large pitcher and both of the chamber pots (see images). Also worth mentioning is the attention the interior of the bowl receives, with as much decoration applied as the exterior (see image). The interior upper perimeters of all of the items receive the same amount of attention. The pitcher and bowl combination is larger than most that were manufactured during that period, (16" diameter) made possible by the strength of the ironstone. The Mason's mark underneath the items indicates a 1830s manufacture, with the "Mason's Patent Ironstone China" above and beneath the crown in blue. The ironstone process was patented by Charles Mason...

Vintage "Buffalo Pottery" Large Pitcher "Buffalo Hunt" Theme Circa 1912
By Buffalo Pottery
Located in Incline Village, NV
Western United States Native American themed pitcher depicts several Indians on horseback hunting buffalo, thus the name "Buffalo Hunt" stamped on the underneath, along with "Buffalo Pottery" and an image of the buffalo logo in blue (see images). The iconic "Buffalo Pottery Company" became famous for manufacturing pottery for the armed forces and later for national park venues such as Yosemite. The pitcher is completely original with no repairs and no repaints, no chips; it is colored and hand painted in shades of dark to light green with gold "speckled" highlighting; most of the gold is intact (typically wears off}. Labeled "semi-vitreous" underneath indicating post 1910 to 1920 manufacture; embodies a sound and well made piece of pottery that can be used with confidence, or put on display. Nice clean and authentic item for those who collect authentic western artifacts...

Victorian Porcelain Spittoon, circa 1880 by Imari, Japan
Located in Incline Village, NV
The mark on the underneath (see image) indicates that this spittoon is of Japanese Imari porcelain, manufactured circa 1880, and made specifically for the American market for the preponderance of bars and saloons at that time. These were popular from 1865 to the turn of the century; this is a particularly fancy and elaborate example. Note the copious and highly detailed and beautiful floral decoration to the inside of the upper portion of the spittoon; pretty fancy for something meant for spit and saliva! Fantastic and all original condition with no cracks, no chips and very bright paint in sharp colors of blue rust and pink, and meticulously painted in a floral pattern. Several of these would have been “stationed” in strategic places within a saloon. This is a wonderful piece of porcelain, and quality item of saloon and Western United States history...
