"Africans with Jars, " Rare Art Deco Charger by Andlovitz for Societa Ceramica
About the Item
Much as Gio Ponti modernized and energized the porcelain production of the fabled Ginori company in Italy, so too did Guido Andlovitz revolutionize the work of the old Societa Ceramica company in Laveno, Italy (which later merged with the Genori firm). This highly stylized view of two half-nude African natives carrying water in terra cotta jars represents Art Deco design at its best, and is one of Andlovitz's rarer designs. The colors -- a dark blue-grey, spring green and deep red -- play beautifully against the soft-cream ground. The back is well-marked, including the design number (5337), and several impressed numbers.
