Burmese Red Lacquer Divided Tray
About the Item
This round tray dates to the early 20th century and is a simple example of Burmese lacquerware. The tray is formed of thin bamboo strips that have been woven and coiled into shape, held in place with a putty of lacquer and sawdust, and finished with layer upon layer of glossy red and black lacquer. The round dish has dividers that split the tray into three separate compartments, ideal for serving a meal or storing the ingredients for betel quid. Possibly originating as one layer of a stacking box, this decorative tray lives on with timeless form and rich texture.
