About the Item

An extraordinarily large and heavy two-handled antique pewter platter produced by Orivit-AG of Germany, circa 1900. The Jugendstil decoration consists of an underwater scene in relief depicting three Art Nouveau fish swimming across the silvery-gray surface. As it was designed to hold an entire fish for the fish course of a dinner party, the ornament mirrors the platter's function. The artistic metal design works as a serving tray but would also make a strong, sculptural statement as wall decor. The piece is in good, original condition with surface wear resulting from almost 120 years of use. The patination is worn, there are a number of utensil scratches on the upper surface and expected areas of wear / scratches on the base. The tray measures 25.75 in. L x 12.5 in. W x 2.5 in. H (at highest points of handles). Stamped “Orivit” with model number “2655” on the base. “Orivit” refers to a metal alloy – a combination of pewter (tin), antimony, copper and silver. Wilhelm Ferdinand Hubert Schmitz founded Orivit Metallwarenfabrik near Cologne in 1894 and the firm quickly gained attention for their artistic metalware designs. This Art Nouveau fish platter was produced at the company's artistic pinnacle; the firm won a Gold Medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900 followed by two Grand Prix awards and a Gold Medal at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. The company was acquired by WMF (Wurttembergische Metalwaren Fabrik) in 1905, remaining in business until 1914.
