About the Item

Mid-century decorative tray (circa 1960s) by Albert Thiry. A chalk-white glaze provides the background for a colourful thistle motif in the centre. The rim has touches of earthy green and brown. The flower is incised providing depth tactility. The markings and colouring are quintessential Albert Thiry. In good overall condition. Signed: 'Thiry' on earthy clay underside of piece. This gallery finds that Thiry's works are more and more in demand in overdue recognition of his artistic creativity. Upon request a video of this piece will be provided. About the Artist: Albert Thiry (1932-2009) was born in Nice, France. His family moved to Vallauris where he spent most of the school holidays in the potteries; in 1956 he was taken on as an assistant decorator with an opportunity to make his own pieces. Albert and his wife, Pyot, set up their own pottery in 1961. Their standard production, in Vallauris clay with added grog to emphasise rusticity, resulted in delightful pieces both highly elaborate and utilitarian. Dimensions: H 5 cm / 2" W 53.5 cm / 21.1" D 22 cm / 8.7".

Robert Picault (1919 - 2000) French ceramist in Vallauris Robert Picault has contributed to the revival of culinary ceramics by updating traditional local forms decorated with lines and geometric designs. His identity style has been a great success and continues to decorate the table today. His personal pieces are sought after by art collectors. A former student of the School of Applied Arts in Paris, Robert Picault arrived in Vallauris in 1946. He created with his school friends Roger Capron (1922-2006) and Jean Derval (1925-2010), the Callis workshop. In this village of a hundred potters, they met the neighboring ceramists André Baud, the 4 potters and among others the Madoura workshop, where he frequented the famous painter Picasso from 1949 to 1955. He also became friends with Jean Cocteau, Fernand Léger, Louis Aragon...
