About the Item

This is a beautifully hand painted Platter in the rare Muscove Duck and Fence pattern by Mason's Ironstone, Lane Delph, England, dating to circa 1840. This mid size platter is well potted in a rectangular / oval shape with a slightly ribbed side edge and moulded wavy rim. The pattern is hand-painted under-glaze and gilded over-glaze with typical bold enamels in one of Mason's Chinoiserie influenced designs called the "Muscove Duck & Fence" pattern, as illustrated on page 101 of a guide to Mason's patent ironstone patterns, circa 1813-1848, published by The Mason's Collectors' Club. The base carries one of Mason's early printed marks in puce with MASON'S above a rectangular sided crown and banner stating; Patent Ironstone China. This piece also has three floral sprigs to the outer base and a printed retailers mark for Thomas & Higginbotham, 11 &12 Wellington Quay, Dublin, with the pattern number 2850 below. The piece dates to circa 1830 to 1848, spanning the late Georgian through William 1Vth to early Victorian period. Overall a rare and striking piece of Mason's Ironstone, in lovely condition, for use or display.
