About the Item

Magnificent rare Victorian vegetable serving Majolica dish made by the Ludwig Wessel at the Poppelsdorf Faience Factory in Bonn, Germany. The dish is made in a Classic Art Nouveau style, designed by Wessel at the height of their finest Majolica faience production. Made of earthenware with a delightful metallic Faience sheen. It is based on the shape and colors of a cucumber in green, with a surrounding of dark green and brown/yellow leaves. Ideal for serving or as a delightful ornamental dish. The Wessel company was started by Johann Mathias Rosenkranz under under the name of the 'Poppelsdorf Faience Fabrique' in Germany, circa 1755. The impressed mark used is the LW back stamp used between 1875 to 1900 which is the finest period for Faience ware production at the Wessel factory.
