About the Item

Derby vase with short neck, superbly painted with large panels to either side within gilt rococo frames, on a deep blue ground with large scroll handles picked out in turquoise, the terminals with applied colourful handles, the decoration consisting of: A- The Three Fates, Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos, seated amongst clouds B- Three birds amongst ruins Unmarked, circa 1760 ------------------------ Provenance: old English collection. This vase belongs to a small group of garnitures with superb painted scenes, the side vases with flared lips flanking a central one like this example. ref. Twitchett 'Derby' 1980 p253 for a garniture by the same hand, where he mentions an idea that they were decorated in London, in the studio of Thomas Hughes, which he dismisses; the birds are certainly similar to factory decoration, and the figures may well be the work of an accomplished artist working at the factory for a short period, as yet un-identified. Another example, in the Derby Museum & Art Gallery, has a flat lid, illustrated p100 in Derby Porcelain- Bradley 1990. A further slightly later garniture can be seen in the British Museum, decorated with Watteauesque scenes, and dating to the 1760's. For an identical garniture with the same scene by the same hand, see Lady Ludlow Collection catalogue #154. This shows how this vase would have looked as the central one of a garniture, although small differences exist, such as the lack of gilt insects on this example.

Repaired: One small section of rim has been re-stuck, a small crack opposite (above 'fates') with small associated chip, small losses to flower petals at handles, minor marks to enamels, original firing fault beneath base filled with 'paste' at time of making. Minor losses. 1 handle re-stuck; lid absent.
