Japonisme Style Porcelaine Planter Signed L'Escalier de Cristal 19th C
About the Item
Exquisite square planter in the Japonisme style. The whole planter is structured on bamboo-style edges.
Each face is decorated with flowers and leaves on a vivid blue background/ Each side has a different pattern and all the designs are framed by a golden line, giving the impression of a cloisonné work.
The planter has a sticker beneath mentioning "L'Escalier de cristal" with the Rue Auber location, referring to the period when L'Escalier de Cristal was in that location in Paris, between after 1872. The porcelain is also signed 7/7, a possible reference to a wider ensemble of 7 pieces thus scattered.
L'Escalier de Cristal was a luxury shop heir to the great merchant-merciers of the 18th century. Probably created circa 1808 by the widow Desarnaud and was taken over in the following years by several partners before being managed by Lahoche and the Pannier family. The shop was transferred to the new Opéra, at 6, rue Scribe and 1, rue Auber.
The Escalier de Cristal produced small pieces of furniture and luxury objects, often of Far Eastern taste, as this planter inspired by Japanese cloisonné.
