A Large 19th C. Meissen Porcelain Model of the Continent of Asia, Lady on Camel

About the Item

A Magnificent and Large 19th Century Meissen Porcelain Model of the Continent of Asia. The figure wears an elaborate headdress with a blue and white mitre-like structure adorned with gold beadwork and a central pink gemstone. She has a white complexion, delicately painted facial features, and long, wavy, light-colored hair falling over her shoulders. Her attire includes a flowing, floral-patterned gown with a yellow bodice featuring gold appliqué, a blue draped mantle, and an additional outer layer with gold-trimmed edges and gemstone-like decorations. The sleeves are voluminous, with the right sleeve in deep blue and the left in pale yellow with a diamond pattern. She holds a gold staff in her right hand and a gold censer suspended by a cord in her left. The camel is realistically modeled with a textured, fur-like porcelain surface in shades of brown. It has a well-defined head, expressive eyes, and a black bridle. The figure is seated on a deep pink saddlecloth with gold embroidery, featuring a fringe-like edge and a symmetrical foliate design. The camel rests on a naturalistic, textured porcelain base designed to resemble rocky terrain with patches of greenery. A stylized palm plant with green fronds emerges from the base behind the figure. The footwear consists of red pointed shoes with gold trim and central blue gemstones. The figure’s jewelry includes a gold beaded necklace, bracelets, and additional gold embellishments on her bodice. The garment’s floral pattern consists of polychrome flowers and scrolling vines, executed in a fine overglaze enamel decoration. Meissen porcelain, founded in 1710 in Germany, was the first European manufacturer to produce true hard-paste porcelain. Under the direction of Johann Friedrich Böttger, Meissen developed into a leading porcelain factory, renowned for its sculptural forms, elaborate decoration, and technical innovations. The company’s works were widely collected by European royalty and aristocracy, often featuring allegorical and mythological themes, as well as elaborate chinoiserie and orientalist designs.
