Meissen stunning rarest figurine group: Zephyr and Flora / The Ideal Love Model P 169 Measures: Height: 8.66 inches (= 22.0 cm) Width: 4.72 inches (= 12.0 cm) Depth: 5.11 inches (= 13.0 cm) Manufactory: Meissen Hallmarked: Blue Meissen Sword Mark (glazed bottom) model number P 169 / former's number 145 First quality Dating: Turn of century / made circa 1900 Material: porcelain, glossy finish, multicolored painted Technique: handmade porcelain Style: Classizism Modelled by: Gustave Deloy (born 1838 in Sedan / France - died 1899 in Paris). Model P 169 created circa 1895-1896. Gustav Deloy, a French sculptor, studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He presented his work in Paris Salon as from the year 1865. After the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871, Deloye worked in Vienna, Austria, where he created busts for example of Count Andrassy and of the Prince of Liechtenstein. Deloye returned to Paris in 1879 and made a statue of Charles-Nicolas Cochin, located at the Hôtel de Ville in Paris. He also worked for the Châteaux of Chenonceau and Boissiere, and modeled the portraits, statues and decorations which were inspired by art of the 18th century. One of his most important works is the Garibaldi Monument, which was erected in Nice. Subject: Figurine group / The Ideal Love (Zephyr and Flora) In Roman mythology, Flora is Goddess of Flowers and of the Season of Spring / her association with the spring gave her particular importance at the coming of springtime. Zephyr was the God of the West Wind (= one of the four seasonal Wind-Gods) as well as husband of Flora. The Meissen figurine group presented here shows the walking winged nude God Zephyr accompanied by Flora who has an elfin's wings: Both are embracing each other fondly, the Goddess of Spring puts her head at beloved man's shoulder. - The figurines are attached to flat base edged by golden painting. This charming pair of Meissen porcelain figures celebrates the essence of Revelry. First modeled by the renowned Johann Joachim Kändler on bases by Peter Reinicke, circa 1767, these joyous groups depict musicians making merry by playing the French horn, flute, guitar and hurdy-gurdy, and gardeners carrying flowers in baskets and aprons. Two almost identical groups are featured in Meissen: Collector’s Catalogue by Laurence Mitchell. Figures by Kändler were especially popular and served as table decorations at courtly banquets. He took the reigns of the Meissen factory in 1733 and over the following 40 years created more than 900 models, many of which were considered the most important and beautiful ever produced. Many of his designs were so timeless and classic that they continued to be used well into the 19th century. Kändler was highly regarded especially for his allegorical representations and he was certainly at his best when designing the Four Continents...
