Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica Thistles Oval Serving Platter

About the Item

A scarce and exceptionally fine vintage Danish porcelain serving platter from the Flora Danica range by renowned makers Royal Copenhagen and dating between 1969 and 1973. The Flora Danica series was first made towards the end of the 18th century and was based on a publication by the same name first published in 1761. The series beautifully names and illustrates examples of Danish flora. Each piece is a work of art with each piece hand painted in fine naturalistic and delicate colors and set within a 22-carat gold and painted border around the edge of each piece. This stunning example is of large oval shaped with a narrower oval shaped base and raised rim. The centre of the platter is hand painted with Echinops Sphaerocephalus (Great Globe Thistles – Arctic Glow). The flowerheads of spherical pom-pom shape stand raised on tall leafy stems and can often measure up to one meter in height. The flowers are very finely painted in tones of lilac and green with fine maroon-colored hairs applied to the green stems. The rim combines a raised bead edging with larger beads set between decorative panels with a serrated edge and painted with greenery and pink patterning highlighted with gilding. The platter is numbered 3518 with a black printed pattern name along with makers marks for Royal Copenhagen along with artist mark and date mark for 1969-73. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market. In good condition with very light wear associated with age and use.

    By Royal Copenhagen
    Located in New Orleans, LA
This hand-painted porcelain plate by Royal Copenhagen is adorned by the firm's highly regarded Flora Danica pattern. While the majority of the motifs in the Flora Danica pattern capture the native fungi and flowers of Denmark, this plate is part of a rare series of crustacean motifs. At its center is a life-like representation of the Nephrops norvegicus, or Norway lobster, while the creature’s Latin name is inscribed on the reverse. Accented with a delicately gilded edge, this plate is a testament to the skill and talent of Royal Copenhagen artists. Once the porcelain supplier to the Queen of Denmark, Royal Copenhagen is known throughout the world for their quality craftsmanship and creative innovation. Founded in 1775 under the authority of Queen Juliane Marie, the first pieces ever produced were complex dining services for the Danish Royal Family...
