Royal Vienna Picture Plate 'Napoleon And Luise In Tilsit', Wagner, circa 1900

About the Item

Very elaborately decorated porcelain plate: the centre is completely filled by a finely painted polychrome image, framed by a delicate pearl border painted in gold on gold: it depicts Emperor Napoleon I of France in his uniform, reaching out his hand to the beautiful Queen Louise of Prussia, with Tsar Alexander I of Russia between them in the background. The plate rim is framed by an elegant, broad meander band and a laurel garland in gold against a burgundy background, the imperial insignia, the Napoleonic eagle with laurel branches on the head, and the laurel-framed ‘N’ at the foot of the plate rim. Signature ‘Wagner’ in the groove of the plate to the left of Napoleon's arm. The painting ‘Napoleon I receives Queen Louise of Prussia in Tilsit in 1807’, 1837 by Nicolas Louis François Gosse (1787-1878), served as a template: in July 1807, Louise tried to persuade Napoleon I to be more lenient towards the losing Prussians in a one-on-one conversation in Tilsit. Her husband had been advised by the Prussian politicians Hardenberg and Kalckreuth, who could think of no better plan. Alexander I of Russia supported the plan. The painting is now in the Musée de Versailles. Painter: Paul Hermann Wagner (1852 - 1937) Painter, glass painter, porcelain painter, studied at the Academy in Munich, pupil of Wilhelm von Lindenschmit the Younger, regularly represented at exhibitions in Munich and Berlin, member of the Luitboldgruppe and the Munich Artists' Cooperative.
