About the Item

Antique set of porcelain cups and saucers was made by R. Delinières & Cie in Limoges, France, in late 19th century. After it was imported, it was hand-painted by Mary Catherine Cremer in 1906 with Arts and Crafts style motifs of abstract trees or shrubs in calm green, cream, and yellow palette with gold accents. Delicate, semi-translucent china pieces serve as a perfect background to an elegant, thoughtfully composed decor. The set of 5 cups and saucers is marked with green "D & Co France" manufacturer mark and signed and dated by the artist in hand writing; the set is in remarkably good antique condition for its age. We are offering 5 settings, or 4+1, as finding a replacement later on might prove to be rather difficult, as it is common with rare, one-of-a-kind hand-painted pieces. R. Delinières & Cie was established in Limoges, France, in 1863 by Rémi Delinières. In 1895 Léonard Bernardaud became the partner in the R. Delinières & Cie, and five years later the company was dissolved and replaced by the new company, L. Bernardaud & Cie. The "D & Co France" mark was in use from 1894 to 1900, when it was replaced by "B & Co France" mark. The advent of Arts and Craft Movement created the notion that the aesthetic quality of everyday utilitarian objects could be improved by merit of craftsmanship, and many painters and artists felt inspired to merge their activities into decorative arts, such as ceramics, decor objects, or dinnerware. Large number of wholesale and retail firms, such as Pickard, Stouffer, or Brauer studios, and many high-end department stores that carried factory decorated Limoges's porcelain, had their own china decorating departments and produced high quality hand painted porcelain. Undecorated Limoges china, known as blanks, was frequently chosen by those firms due to its high quality. Undecorated blanks were also offered for sale, to be hand-painted by both professional studio artists and amateur artists. Notably, some of the professional artists were women; china decoration started to be considered a respectable occupation for a woman, creating an additional source of income for those who needed it and had appropriate skills. Mary Catherine Cremer appears to be a trained, highly skilled professional decorator, and examples of her signed work show that she was painting on porcelain until at least 1914.
