About the Item

Beautiful glaze colors in this prolific California potter incised bowl. Hand turned and decorated with a figure, dragon and trees. Depicting Saint George and the Dragon. Circa late 1960's. Matt glaze on exterior, high-tone mottled glaze on interior. Signed on base. Excellent original condition. David Stewart: David Stewart is an American educator, painter/potter and former assistant to the late Marguerite Wildenhain for nearly 20 years. Mr. Stewart is one of the original apprentices of Wildenhain, whom herself was the apprentice of renowned German artist Gerhard Marcks at the Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany in the late 1920's and early 1930's. Stewart studied industrial design at San Diego State University in San Diego, California, graduating in 1958. He became an assistant instructor at the noted Pond Farm artists’ colony in 1962, teaching along side Marguerite Wildenhain for many years. The colony inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin, was home to Wildenhain and served as an elite artist community hosting artists from across the world from the mid 1940's until 1985. The grounds are now part of the California State Parks system. In a letter to Marguerite Wildenhain in 1974, now held in the Archives of the Smithsonian, Stewart reflected on his time with Wildenhain: "The first time I walked through the gate at Pond Farm, I sensed that there were invisible standards there-- precious secrets that were not treated secretly or preciously. I read from the master at Pond Farm words I had only read in books, ideas I firmly believe in but had never tried to live by. I saw the master living by these ideas. The integrity, simplicity, and beauty of this example have been a source of strength and inspiration to me." By the early 1980’s, Stewart became a full-time master potter owning and operating a boutique shop and gallery at Bazaar del Mundo in Old Town, San Diego. Mr. Stewart is a sought after consultant to the ceramics industry for design, clay body and glazes. David also had his own pottery label with Lion's Valley Stoneware for many years. Mr. Stewart has exhibited in the United States, Japan, Australia and Canada. His pottery and paintings are represented in several museums throughout the world and held in the Luther College Fine Arts Collection along with Wildenhain and Marcks. Source: Homested.
