Italian Castelli Majolica Bases, circa 1800

About the Item

Italian Castelli majolica bases, Circa 1800. This pair of bases for large vases are a typical example of the high quality manufacturing of the Castelli Majolica. Each of the 2 bases has painted on the surface pairs of winged cherubs seated on marble bases surrounded by flowers and plants. The winged cherubs hold up baskets of grapes a mirror and musical plates. Between one Putto and the next, butterflies and a two-colored bow can be seen. The typical colors of the Majolica of Castelli Ochre Yellow and Pale Blue are present on the entire surface of the bases. Loved by many collectors, the Castelli Majolica are among the finest ceramics in the world. Among the most famous manufacturing shops of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries we find the Grue and the Gentile families in the foreground. Reference about the Castelli Majolica can be found in a couple of volumes of the Museum of San Martino entitled Ceramiche Castelli, Naples and other factories by Teodoro Fittipaldi and published by Electa Napoli Copyright 1992.
